Teaming Up for Optimal Health
Most chiropractors regard the elimination of symptoms as the easiest part of a persons care. If all that the chiropractor does is to reduce the pain and stop there, the chances of the condition recurring are much greater. In order to prevent a rapid recurrence of symptoms, it is necessary to continue receiving care even though your acute symptoms are mostly gone. There is a limited window of opportunity where the new tissues being laid down to heal the injured tissues are in a molding process. Failure to take advantage of this limited window may result in scar tissues that have irregular patterns that will not allow full range of motion to return without painful restrictions. This is also important in phase 1, but even more important in phase 2 of healing.
During this correction / restorative phase of your care, joint mobilization, muscle strengthening and stretching will mark the essentials of treatment for most strain/sprain type back/neck injuries. Much of the treatment in this 2nd Phase is dependent upon the patient avoiding strenuous activities while at the same time being regular with home exercise programs. For some, a more structured program at Golds Gym or Powell's Wellness Center may be advisable.
Do not be discouraged if you have mild flare-ups in your symptoms on occasion. This is normal. In everyday life situations, with unexpected demands, flare-ups are bound to occur during this phase because your body has not healed with full strength and stabillity. Depending on the severity of your injury or degenerative condition and how long you have been suffering from it, this phase of your care may last anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months. For some, who have had a chronic pain condition for many years, phase 2 may be extemded beyond a few months and they may also need phase 3 treatment as well with an eye to living within their limits of work and play.
